Bailey was killed around 7:30AM on 14th Street near Alice Street, in what police described as "an assassination". Chauncey Bailey was an editor for the Oakland Post and had previously worked as a reporter for The Oakland Tribune. New America Media Executive Director Sandy Close said of Bailey, "Chauncey was a co-founder of New America Media and one of the best investigative journalists working bar none. He was bra ve in the face of wh atever challenges he had to confront, especially any institution, public or private, that was not living up to the communities expectations and standards." http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/08/03/18438615.php August 6th Hiroshima Memorial in Livermore Hiroshima Memorial At LLNL 08/03/07 - antiwar On Monday August 6th, there will be a memorial ceremony and nonviolent direct action at the Livermore Nuclear Weapons Lab, marking the 62nd anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The commemoration will culminate with an air raid siren and a moment of silence and reflection at 8:15 AM, the exact time of day the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. The Livermore Lab action is among dozens of Hiroshima-Nagasaki commemorations being held around the country at nuc lear facilities and corp orate war profiteers under the umbrella, "No Nukes! No Wars! No Profiteers!" and coordinated by United for Peace and Justice. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/08/03/18438608.php Patients and Supporters Rally for Sanctuary City in Berkeley Patients Protest Seizure of Medical Cannabis Dispensary's Funds 08/02/07 - drugwar On July 31st, medical marijuana patients and supporters rallied at a Berkeley City Council meeting to urge the City Council to adopt a Sanctuary Resolution to help protect medical cannabis dispensaries within the city. Supporters were mobilized because the LAPD had just seized the bank account of the Berkeley Patients' Group, which is a local dispensary. Local activists spoke about the need to protect patients and providers from federal interference both in Berkeley and across the state. On, July 30 , tens of thousands of people from the APPO and the section 22 of the teacher's union along with sympathizers participated in a protest against and demand a popular boycott of the official Guelaguetza festival. Publishers are being forced to make “very difficult” decisions, firing significant numbers of staff in order to make ends meet. At least, that’s what corporate media executives want you to think. http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/07/30/18438053.php Trial in Case of Medical Cannabis Doctor and Attorney Begins Fry and Schafer's Trial is Ongoing in Sacramento 07/30/07 - drugwar After almost six years of persecution, Dr. Mollie Fry and her husband, Attorney Dale Schafer have a chance to defend themselves in court. The trial started on August 1st, and will continue in the Federal Courthouse, at 501 I St. in Sacramento before Judge Damrell, from Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30am to 3:30pm and on Mondays from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. Venceremos Brigade Members from the Central Valley Return 07/29/07 - centralvalley | americas Fifty eight members of the 38th Venceremos ("We Shall Overcome") Brigade to Cuba returned to the United States on July 28th. They marched across the "Peace Bridge" that links Fort Erie in Canada and Buffalo, New York. On the US side they were greeted by supporters and welcomed with a picnic.
