Traditionally, this has meant that "Intelligence" is not published during the summer vacation period of July and August. The result has been a serious lacuna on information concerning events during that period and an information overload for the September issues of "Intelligence". To try to solve those problems, we have decided to try out the idea of publishing a "special summer summary issue" consisting of only press reports without additional analysis and commentary as in normal issues of "Intelligence". After reading this issue, please let us know you what you think of this idea. The next "regular" issue of "Intelligence" will be on 3 September 2007. We wish you an enjoyable summer. --------------------------------------------- TECHNOLOGY AND TECHNIQUES Intelligence, N. 502, 23 July 2007, p. 2 TIMELINE & REPORTS FROM 29 JUNE TO 20 JULY Summer has arrived and there have been few major events or major changes in note on the international scene, and much of our preceding Timeline analysis can be repeated with only slight modifications: "little has changed on the US parapolitical scene where the US attorney scandal continues to dominant the scene and shows no signs of weakening. On the international scene, the many simmering crises mentioned in our recent issues continue to bubble ... The Democrat-dominated US Senate promises soon to get back to attacking the Bush White House's war in Iraq..." The slight modifications include the inclusion of the US attorney scandal in a more general Bush White House crisis leading toward impeachment and the increasing confrontation of the Bush White House and its British allies with Russia. Among the noteworthy articles published over the past three weeks, "Intelligence" found: 0625 Aviation Week, Network Focus: Using unmanned aerial vehicles and sensor pod-equipped fighter aircraft to find improvised explosive devices (IEDs) is a waste of time and resources, according to Air Force Gen. In general, the past three weeks' news reports collected and retained by "Intelligence" were distributed in the following manner: Bush corruption (59 entries, 27K), Iraq war in Washington (59X, 27K), Iraq war (24X, 11K), US politics (26X, 10K), FBI & Bush surveillance policy (21X, 9K), Pakistan (12X, K), Dept. of Defense (10X, 6K), Dept. of Justice scandal (13X, 6K), Afghanistan (9X, 6K), Eastern Europe (16X, 6K), US torture (13X, 6K), Middle East (Israel, Gaza, West Bank - 12X, 5K), CIA (5X, 3K), Americas (5X, 3K), Western Europe (4X, 2K), Iran (5X, 2K), with Asia, Media, Canada and African each with 1K. One should remember that these figures measure only relative importance and are based on article summaries, not on the entire article. Nonetheless, one can note the relative lack of attention concerning conflicts in Iran and North Korea, and a concentration of attention on Bush White House scandals, problems and policies, but less concentration on the Department of Justice scandal alone. Also, problems involving Eastern Europe have increased, as mentioned above. TIMELINE FROM 29 JUNE TO 20 JULY (...cut...) ---------------------------------------------
