[progchat_action] The New York Times editorial on Iraq Date: Mon, 9 Jul 2007 02:29:56 -0500 (CDT) ( This editorial is truly a milestone. While it does not actually call for full withdrawal or disengagement from Iraq - note the language about bases - it is nonetheless extraordinary that the most authoritative news outlet in the US would now call the war a failure and demand that the government cut its losses - especially when one recalls the cheerleading the paper did in the run up to the war. One should not, of course, expect the US Government to immediately change course and commence withdrawal operations. Years passed between the first such editorials demanding withdrawal from Vietnam and the time when the last helicopter left the US embassy in Saigon. What can be said, with all the qualifications contained within its text and all the reality checks, is that this editorial shows that ending the Iraq War is, finally, a politically realistic goal. SR) The Road Home The New York Times Editorial July 8, 2007 It is time for the United States to leave Iraq, without any more delay than the Pentagon needs to organize an orderly exit.
