Clear Channel on top in bus shelter bidding

By Rachel Gordon

Clear Channel Outdoor Inc. came out the top bidder to enter into
negotiations with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency
to provide new bus shelters in the city, officials said Friday.

The company was one of three bidders for the contract, which
potentially is worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the winning
firm.

The contract will require the company to install between 1,110 and
1,500 new shelters over five years. Clear Channel will get the
lucrative advertising rights on the shelters and will get to build
as many as 150 new advertising kiosks.

The bidders had to guarantee minimum annual payments to the city
during the duration of the 20-year contract, starting at $3.5 million
the first year and ending at $18.2 million in the last year.

Details of Clear Channel's bid were not disclosed. The final terms
of the contract must still be negotiated.

The contract, which is scheduled to begin in December, must first be
approved by the Municipal Transportation Agency's Board of Directors,
the Port Commission and the Board of Supervisors.

The two other bidders were CBS Outdoor, which holds the existing
contract, and Cemusa.
