Dear Roger,

Thanks to your support, our ship the Farley Mowat is currently travelling across the world with a crew of brave volunteers, headed towards Iceland to intervene against their illegal whaling activities. Currently, the ship and crew are crossing the South Pacific searching for and confiscating illegal longlines on their way to the Galapagos. Read the blog from the crew here.

In this edition of the E-News, you will read about our fight to bring devastating eco-crimes to justice in the Treasured Islands, our mandate to return to Antarctica in December, and another easy way to raise money for Sea Shepherd.
Operation Mangrove Uncovers Political Corruption
Galapagos Wetlands Ecosystem Destroyed

Mayor GilSince April of 2007, Sea Shepherd Galapagos (SSG) Teams have been investigating the political corruption and environmental crimes surrounding Isabela, which has seen the devastation of wetlands vital to the overall ecosystem and unique wildlife that call mangroves their home. We are calling this project Operation Mangrove.

The Mayor of Isabela, Pablo Gordillo Gil, has been sanctioned with six environmental crimes; this time for the cutting of mangroves trees which are inhabited by a wide array of unique species to the Galapagos. Violin crabs and endangered penguins make their home and catch their food in the complex root systems of the trees.

Mayor Gil, claiming to have jurisdiction over an area in the national park, authorized municipal employees armed with chainsaws to destroy a 35-square meter area of 80- to 90- year old trees. Then they dumped truck loads of dirt over the area, ending any chance that the area might recover.

The SSG Team investigated the devastating ecological crimes, and brought their findings to key governmental authorities and media outlets in Quito, Ecuador. Their determination resulted in the district attorney launching an investigation into the actions of Mayor Gil.
Whales Win, Japan Loses at CITES
Humpback WhalesTrade in Whale Products Illegal

At the June 6th meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in The Hague, Netherlands, Japan and Iceland once again failed to remove the protection status of the world's whales.

This ruling, coupled with the condemnation of Japanese whaling in the Antarctic by the International Whaling Committee last month, gives Sea Shepherd a clear mandate to return to the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary in December 2007 to renew efforts to obstruct and shut down illegal Japanese whaling operations.

GoodSearch.com is a new search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. You use it just as you would any search engine, and it's powered by Yahoo!, so you get great results.

Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter Sea Shepherd as the charity you want to support. Just 500 of us searching four times a day will raise about $7300 in a year without anyone spending a dime! And, be sure to use GoodSearch.com at work and at home so you can earn money for the animals all day long! Be sure to tell you friends so they can participate as well!

Our fight to save the oceans and the animals which live in them is strengthened by every effort from our staff, and from you, our volunteers and supporters around the world. From serving as a crew member or educating others to the plight of ocean wildlife, to earning one penny for every Internet search, our strength comes from you and the myriad of ways in which you help us. I thank-you for all you do for us and for ocean wildlife worldwide.
