CORRECTION: Silence the Violence Day is June 14th Date: Fri, 25 May 2007 14:19:36 -0400 (EDT) PLEASE FORWARD ** PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY ** PLEASE FORWARD Our sincerest apologies for sending two messages, but the wrong date was given for Silence the Violence Day in the original email. Please mark your calendars: Silence the Violence Day is Thursday, June 14. We'll be sending more updates and details soon. Dear roger, On the morning before Mother's Day more than 100 people came together for a beautiful event that inspired hope for a future Oakland without violence. "Mothers Morning/Mourning" not only memorialized victims of senseless violence, but also created a sense of community among those working for a more peaceful future. Click here to see more photos of the event: http://www.ellabakercenter.org/page.php?pageid=78&contentid=249 The gathering began at Lake Merritt, where the crowd -- many dressed in red to symbolize both loss and hope -- observed a moment of silence to honor victims of violence. Mothers held pictures of their lost children, while family and friends surrounded them, carrying "Silence The Violence" signs, flowers, and other symbols of love and mourning. The group then walked through downtown Oakland in a silent procession to the steps of City Hall. The crowd grew to 100 people at City Hall. Two mothers, Tracey Christian and Beverly Franklin, shared their stories. They described losing their children, and how they moved through grief to strengthening communities. Their courageous messages of hope inspired everyone, including other grieving mothers. The newspaper and TV news spread their messages to thousands more. "Mothers Morning/Mourning" was everything we hoped it would be. Please join us for our next event, Silence the Violence Day, on June 14th. Vigils will be held in both Oakland and San Francisco. Save the date - event details will be available soon. Sincerely, Nicole Lee Silence the Violence An Ella Baker Center Campaign Special thanks to our collaborators on "Mothers Morning/Mourning": Boundless Hearts, Holy Names University, Allen Temple Baptist Church and Bread for the Journey.
