A Very Large Blank Check for the Emperor Bush's Quagmire Date: Fri, 25 May 2007 12:15:22 -0500 (CDT) Dear friend, Will the people of Iraq ever forgive us? Congress gave Bush a very large blank check yesterday, nearly $100 billion with no meaningful strings attached to continue the illegal U.S. occupation of Iraq. We need to follow-up with thanks to those who opposed it, and share our disgust with those who voted to continue the quagmire. Please call your Members of Congress to let them know how you feel about their votes, this follow-up is very important. The number to the Congressional switchboard is 202-224-3121. More information, including links to websites where you can find out how your representative and senators voted are on our blog at http://peaceblog.wordpress.com. Thanks to all of you who posted comments on the blog yesterday (http://peaceblog.wordpress.com/2007/05/23/funding-the-troops-means-more-troops-are-going-to-die/), and please share any feedback or information (especially any "reasons" on why your rep voted wrong, if that is the case) you get from congressional staff by posting on the blog. While many Members of Congress voted the right way on a war spending bill for the first time, this is not a good day for our democracy, nor especially for the people of Iraq. We have been doing our jobs in mobilizing a strong majority of Americans calling for an end to the occupation; would that more Members of Congress do their jobs better and listen to the American people. We will not give up, in the near term we will raise the pressure on recalcitrant Members of Congress, and we will mobilize for votes this summer and fall to bring our troops home and stop the $145 billion requested in the 2008 budget to continue the war. Thank you for all your support. To paraphrase a great gospel hymn, let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with us. For Peace, Kevin Martin Executive Director /*Your email ID. --*/
