Nearly 500 journalists, scholars and political leaders held a ceremony in the capital Ankara, in which the journalists association granted its awards for the year 2006. Association president Ahmet Abakay, announced that Fidel Castro has been awarded the Special Prize for his anti-imperialist struggle, as it can be read on the small statuette representing the award, and which was received by Cuban ambassador in Turkey Ernesto Gomez Abascal. The general secretary of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization Leonidas Chrysanthopoulos highlighted the personality of Fidel Castro and called him an international politician and statesman, who been able to guide his people despite the difficulties posed by the over 45-year US economic and commercial blockade of the island. On behalf of the Cuban President and the people of Cuba ambassador Abascal expressed thankfulness for the homage and spoke of Fidel Castro as a revolutionary and educator of journalists who are faithful to the truth and to their commitment to the people.
