[SPAM] [progchat_action] Controversy Over Chinese Remains Found Under Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2006 01:11:56 -0500 (CDT) Controversy Heats Up Over Chinese Remains Found Under LA Subway World Journal, Apr 18, 2006 LOS ANGELES - The discovery of remains of Chinese immigrants who died over 100 years ago buried under the Los Angeles subway system has caused further controversy as community leaders try to sort out what to do with the remains, reports the World Journal. A spokesperson from the office of Senator Dianne Feinstein expressed his shock about the discovery and said the senator's office will follow up with the Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA), which runs the subway system in Los Angeles. Community leaders including the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California said that the MTA did not immediately reveal that the remains were of Chinese descent because it did not want to delay construction of an extended line that connects Union Station to East Los Angeles. Anthropologists believe that the MTA construction site is near a Chinese cemetery. In the late 19th century, about 10,000 Chinese men were working in Los Angeles on the rail roads. Because of anti-Chinese sentiments in society at that time, they were banned from being buried in the same cemetery as whites. http://news.newamericamedia.org/news/view_article.html?article_id=7457f2b5d4 ea6971e9a4e25bd23afe80 This email was cleaned by emailStripper, available for free from http://www.papercut.biz/emailStripper.htm
