[BATN] Another overheard bomb "threat" closes Palo Alto transit center Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2006 16:38:42 -0000 Published Thursday, March 24, 2006, by PaloAltoOnline.com False bomb scare closes transit center By Don Kazak A bomb scare at the Palo Alto Transit Center in downtown Palo Alto Thursday morning shut down the transit center for more than two hours while officers interviewed a commuter and x-rayed his two suitcases. No bomb or other device was found. The investigation began when the man was overheard mentioning "a device" while riding the Santa Clara County lightrail system, carrying two suitcases, at about 8:30 a.m. He was tracked to the Palo Alto transit center where he was questioned by Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office bomb squad officers, according to Deputy Sheriff Serg Palanov. Buses were re-routed to hotel parking areas south of University Avenue. While the transit center itself was cordoned off, Caltrain commuter trains continued to operate. The Palo Alto Red Cross chapter had to evacuate its building just west of the transit center. Eight employees and five volunteers relocated to the Palo Alto Creamery restaurant at Stanford Shopping Center, according to Red Cross Director Trish Bubenik, where they were still waiting for an all clear at 11:30 a.m. "They told us to get as far away as we could," Bubenik said.
