The report states that in the last seven years there was found no evidence of an Iraqi nuclear weapons program. American and Indian officials will meet in Frankfurt this Thursday to discuss the possibilities of India joining an international test ban treaty but Indian officials think its unlikely the two will reach an agreement. ISLAMABAD Pakistan July 11 1998 - Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif said Saturday that the country will have to pay the price for its nuclear tests but sees no serious problems. Pakistan faces a possible debt moratorium. Since sanctions were imposed after Pakistan's nuclear tests the stockmarket has plunged and the rupee devaluated drastically. WISCASSET Maine July 10 1998 - The shipment of nuclear waste from Maine Yankee's npp to Texas is temporarily stalled after a Texan court declared the Sierra Blanca nuclear waste site unsuitable because it lies on a fault line. The Texan Natural Resource Conservation Commission which has final authority on licensing the site is expected to decide on the site this fall. WASHINGTON July 9 1998 - A U.S. Senate task force has decided agricultural exports will be exempted from the sanctions imposed on India and Pakistan. It further gives President Clinton the authority to waive other penalties. WASHINGTON July 15 & 16 1998 - An application for a U.S. visa by the head of India's atomic energy commision was send back to him with the explanation that visa policy is currently under review as a result of the Pakistani and Indian nuclear tests. Washington is also reviewing its scientific cooperation with the two countries. WASHINGTON July 15 1998 - North Korea is believed to own more plutonium than it reported after the 1994 agreements to freeze its nuclear program. U.S. State Departement spokesman Rubin said North Korea will not be allowed to use the two light water reactors it was promised until the discrepancy is solved. WASHINGTON July 15 & 16 1998 - The U.S. House Select Committee on Intelligence has concluded that countries like North Korea Iran or Libya are capable of developing ballistic missiles that could reach the American mainland within a couple of months or years. The CIA claims the missiles under development by these countries only have the capability to reach Hawaii or Alaska. NEW DELHI July 10 1998 - India will not bow to Western pressure to sign the CTBT India's prime minister Vajpayee said Friday. India is prepared to discuss the subject though. Vajpayee also repeated a call for Pakistan to sign a no-first-strike pact with India.
