Because of a series of safety problems the plant was closed two years ago. Critics described the facility as the worst nuclear fiasco in the US since the Three Mile Island plant mishap in Pennsylvania back in 1979. However according to NRC's commissioners said they agreed with the earlier conclusions from agency staff that Northeast has made improvements for safely operating the plant. NEW DELHI June 14 1998 (AP) -- Despite the Indian five nuclear tests Russia's planned sale of an atomic reactor to India will continue. OAK RIDGE June 14 1998 (AP) -- A complex where uranium was enriched for nuclear weapons some 30 miles west of Knoxville is being reborn as the East Tennessee Technology Park. Until recently the place was named by the code name K-25 part of the Manhattan Project that created the first atomic bomb. Due to falling demand the facility was closed in 1987. There are 13 million square feet of industrial space here most of it needing decontamination from radioactivity chemicals or asbestos. By Tom Doggett WASHINGTON June 17 1998 (Reuters) - The Union of Concerned Scientist observed 10 US nuclear power plants in the period from November 1996 to January 1998. Their inspectations show that safety guarantees at the nation`s 104 nuclear reactors aren`t sufficient. Problems which occured in nuclear power plants weren`t discovered by internal safety inspectors. Human mistakes form another risk for nuclear safety. USC proposes to let workers and internal auditors absolve further safety trainings. In addition Congress should review Nuclear Regulatory Commission`s safety measures. I-98-71 June 17 1998-The Nuclear Regulatory Commission wants GPU Nuclear Corporation to pay a penalty of $55 000 because of violations at the emergency system of their Oyster Creek plant. NRC discovered shortcomings at the facility`s automatic depressurization system. This system is important to reduce pressure in the reactor.
