He also said an accident at Cuba's Juragua nuclear power facility could pose a health threat to the United States. CHICAGO May 6 1998 - Commonwealth Edison says the utility has enough generating capacity to prevent a summer power shortage in northern Illinois although only four of its former 10 npp's are online. It hopes its Quad Cities npp will be on line by June 1. HADDAM NECK Conn May 5 1998 - The NRC has lifted restrictions on radiological work at the Connecticut Yankee npp now that adequate radiological controls have been installed. The major decommissioning of the plant can now begin. KIEV May 6 1998 - Ukraine and the U.S. signed an agreement on nuclear cooperation between Ukraine and the U.S. The U.S. will pay $30 million to modernize Ukraine's nuclear power industry. The accord was made possible by the fact that Ukraine refrains from selling nuclear technology to Iran. LONDON May 8 1998 - The U.S. condemns the North Korean statement that it might resume its nuclear program. North Korea says that the U.S. are not keeping their promise to supply alternative fuel. Further North Korea doubts that the planned light water reactors Japan South Korea and the U.S. have to finance will be ready in time. PITTSBURGH May 8 1998 - The NRC has approved the Final Safety Evaluation Report (FSER) for the AP600. Westinghouse expects the Final Design Approval (FDA) in September. LONDON May 10 1998 - British Energy wants to buy the Three Mile Island npp and the Oyster Creek npp from General Public Utilities according to the Observer. NEW YORK May 8 1998 - Georgia Power Company's Vogtle 2 npp tripped off the line after one of its transformers was struck by lightning. TOKYO May 8 - North Korea warns the U.S. it may resume its nuclear program. It says the U.S. is not delivering fuel it is bound to provide under an agreement reached in 1994 on time. North Korea further has doubts that the two npp's it was promised will not be ready on time.
