BG&E has agreed to hire an independent contractor to assess the quality and performance of ongoing radiological control activities. These findings will be given to the NRC. NEW YORK 28 April 1998 (Reuters) The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said it fined Boston Edison Co for multiple safety-related violations at its 670 megawatt (MW) Pilgrim nuclear power station in Plymouth Mass. The violations identified during three NRC inspections conducted between May 1997 and January 1998 were level 3 and 4 in severity based on a scale from level 1 to 4 with 1 being the most severe NRC said. HARTFORD Conn 28 April 1998 (Reuters) Gov John Rowland will sign Connecticut's electric deregulation measure into law on Wednesday. After several years of intense debate Connecticut's Senate and House of Representatives passed the bill on April 15. House Bill 5005 promises a 10-percent reduction in electric bills beginning in the year 2000. Customers will also be able to select their power provider at that time. Several Connecticut lawmakers and citizens' groups opposed the electricity deregulation bill because they felt it was an undeserved bailout for Northeast. WASHINGTON 28 April 1998 (Reuters) Senate Energy Committee Chairman Frank Murkowski said if the Clinton administration wants to pass legislation it must get involved in the debate on electricity restructuring. He has complained that Energy Secretary Federico Pena's decision to leave the administration in June will make it difficult to resolve a number of issues. He repeated that his committee would hold hearings on the administration's plan once it submits formal legislative language. HARTFORD Conn. 28 April 1998 (Reuters) Northeast Utilities said it is reviewing its accounting with the Securities and Exchange Commission for costs associated with outages at the Millstone nuclear power plant. Additionally the utility holding company said it anticipated a June restart for the plant's Millstone 3 unit and a restart later in the year for Millstone 2. No restart work is being undertaken at Millstone 1. All three units of the Waterford Conn. plant have been off line for more than two years because of safety concerns. PARIS 28 April 1998 (AP) According to a study released Saturday the peaks of the Alps still contain radiation from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Everyone who frequent the mountainous heights could be at risk and should be warned the report said.
