NEW YORK April 20 1998 (Reuters) At the Darlington nuclear power station in Ontario the 935 MW unit 4 was shut Saturday for maintenance. The three other 935 MW units were operating normally. Furthermore the 540 MW Pickering nuclear unit 8 and 915 MW Bruce unit 8 were shut for maintenance last Thursday and Friday respectively. DALLAS April 20 1998 (AP) The New York Democrat Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan warned that expansion of NATO could threaten U.S.-Russian relations and pose the greatest risk of nuclear war since the beginning of the atomic age. Moynihan cautioned that U.S.-Russian relations could disintegrate if the expansion goes forward. WASHINGTON April 21 1998 (Reuters) According to a study by Brookings Institution the Defense Department is underestimating the cost of the U.S. nuclear arsenal by nearly two-thirds or tens of billions of dollars a year. The researchers found that the US would spend an estima- ted $35.1 billion on nuclear weapons and weapons-related programs in fiscal 1998 which ends Sept. 30. By contrast the Defense Department's estimate was $13 billion. Although overall U.S. nuclear weapons costs have dropped about 40 percent since the end of the Cold War they still represent 14 percent of all appropriated funds for national defense the study said. NEW YORK April 21 1998 (Reuters) - The US and Britain have started a classified operation to remove nuclear material from the Caucasus nation of Georgia The New York Times reported on Tuesday. Citing unnamed Western officials the Times said the supply of highly enriched uranium and spent nuclear fuel is stored at a research reactor outside the Georgian capital of Tbilisi. The operation which is code-named Auburn Endeavor shows that the US is now prepared to operate in former Soviet repu- blics such as Georgia.
