Pioneer
robot engineers team to help Ukraine stabilizing the
Chernobyl Unit Four Nuclear Power Plant.
The Pioneer team consists on DOE
NASA
academics and private-
sector scientists. They will establish together with Ukraine a
system which helps analysing the damaged plant for to be able
to repair the sarcophagues around it.
Parts of the plant are still such contaminated that working
there would create grave health problems.



NEW YORK
April 8 `98 (Reuters) - The Millstone 3 nuclear
generating plant owned by Northeast Utilities (NU) has been
offline for two years for safety improvements. NU has been
spending for upgrade works at about $28 million each month.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Wednesday it plans two
weeks of critical inspectation of the Unit starting on April
13. After that it will vote whether it shall give restart
permission or not.

House Itochu Corp told April 6 that it was helding talks with
the Russian energy company Techsnabexports about possible
uranium imports. But as a Itochu Corp spokesman said this
considerations aren`t serious and have no relation to the
coming visit of Russias President Yeltsin to Japan.
For its nuclear energy program Japan depends completely on
uranium imports.

third and final US Seawolf submarine will become named after
former US president Jimmy Carter. A NAVY statement said that
he had been the only US president ever to qualify in
submarines.
The Jimmy Carter submarines will along the NAVY statement be
able to safely conduct deep strike missions while submerged
far off an enemy`s coast.

Food irradiation is still distrusted by consumers.
During an irradiation conference food irradiation industry
officials focused on the safety of this method and on its
importance in killing bacteria. This options they will try to
give to consumers. Anti-nuclear groups and several health
advocats however fear that food irradiation will lead to a
neglecting of other bacteria reducing methods as proper
handling and plant sanitation.
This summer the Agricultural Department shall release first
proposals of rules regarding food irradiation. At the end of
the year definite rules shall be made.
