Alan J. Noia Allegheny Energy Chairman declares this decision moves the company closer to their goal of completing the merger in the second quarter of this year. When the merger is complete Allegheny Energy will serve a population of more than 4.5 million with 2 million customers in a 30 000-square-mile service area across five states. OTTAWA (UPI) April 3 1998 According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. the Canadian government had received word from London that Britain has approved the purchase of four diesel-powered submarines. Canada is reportedly buying the four used Upholder-class submarines for $800 million. The British subs built in the early 1990s will replace Canada's three aging Oberon-class submarines built in the 1960s. PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) April 3 1998 PECO Energy Co. was denied an injunction against Great Bay Power Corp which terminated a contract with PECO's Power Team to market Great Bay's share of power from Seabrook Power Team spokesman David Greer said. The U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire however also stated that Great Bay Power's grounds for terminating the marketing agreement were ``particularly weak.'' Following the court order this week the proceedings now go into the discovery phase PECO said. LONDON (UPI) April 3 1998 The concrete sarcophagus around the destroyed Chernobyl is crumbling. Maintenance authorities fear a collapse of the roof which could send radioactive dust into the atmosphere once again. Quoted in a BBC report today the head of maintenance at the ruined plant Artur Korneyev declares: ``The most dreadful effect would be on Ukraine's river system. The Dnieper River which flows through Kiev would carry radioactive pollution. Eventually the whole Black Sea area could be contaminated.'' Western states are pledged to contribute money to build a new casing for the reactor in exchange for its closure in two years. NEW YORK (AP) 4 April 1998 The New York Times reports that two US companies are being investigated on suspicion to bolster China's ballistic missile program.
