legislature. The Republican Governor John Rowland said that he

March 31 `98 (Reuters) -Japan`s oldest commercial nuclear
reactor in Tokai 66 miles (110 km) from Tokyo was shut down on
Tuesday Japan`s Atomic Power Co official told.
The main reason for its shut down had been the high costs of its
system. Now the decommissioning and demolition works which are
very complicated and expensive have to be executed for the first
time in Japan.
The thousands tonnes of radioactive waste which are left over
shall become stored for 30-50 years at a storage facility in
Aomori before beeing buried in the ground.



WASHINGTON
April 2 `98 (Reuters) - A contract between Maine

Vermont and Texas which schedules Texas to take the low level
radioactive waste of the two other states in exchange of $25
million from each of them to build a waste storage facility was
approved on Wednesday by the US Senate.

Amsterdam April 2 `98 (Reuters)-In 1992 an EL-Al Cargo jet
crashed in the Bijlmer a part of Amsterdam. It had contained
about 390 Kilo of depleted uranium as ballast. This ballast might
have caused a number of sicknesses under the inhabitants of this
part of the city. Now 6 years later the Dutch government
promissed a new inquiry of this accident after it arose again
public attention by a controversial examination the Dutch
pressure group Stichting Visie made about it.
