Jan 5 `98 (Reuters) -An Ontario Hydro spokesman made
certain on Monday that three of the eight generating units at
the Pickering nuclear power station had been shut down in
december for improvement works.









Ontario Hydro confirmed Monday three of eight generating units
at the Pickering nuclear power complex were taken off line
late December
as scheduled
for extensive upgrades.  Last
August
the provincially-owned utility unveiled a
multi-billion dollar overhaul of its beleaguered nuclear
operations. Under the plan
the company would shut the four
Pickering ``A'' units by the end of December and three ``A''
units at the Bruce nuclear plant by the end of March.  ``The
lay-up of the A side has been executed
'' an Ontario Hydro
spokesman said.  One of the Pickering A units was taken out of
service before December for work on its emergency coolant
system.  The remaining three units were laid up during the
last days of December.  The Ontario Hydro spokesman could not
provide the operating status of the four Pickering units on
the ``B'' side and the restart date of the A units.  All eight
units at Pickering
east of Toronto on Lake Ontario
each have
a net rating of 500 megawatts (MW).  The three Bruce A units
are each rated at 825 MW.
