Subject: Mobile Chernobyl vote is Wednesday! The House floor vote on HR 1270 the "Mobile Chernobyl Act will be Wednesday afternoon, October 29, 1997. On Tuesday afternoon, the House will vote on the rule that accompanies the bill. Debate on the bill itself is scheduled to begin at 11 am on Wednesday. The Rules Committee, which met last Friday, has allowed eight amendments to be considered. There will be 20 minutes debate on each amendment and one hour for the bill itself. Thus the process should take about 3 1/2 hours or so, perhaps quite a bit longer if the amendments receive recorded votes. Nevada Reps Ensign and Gibbons had wanted to offer nine amendments, the Rules Committee only allowed four, and these were the four least important to the two Reps. Rep. Markey has an amendment, as do Millender-McDonald, Traficant and Kildee. Ensign and Gibbons will hold a press conference at 1 pm on Tuesday at the Capitol to denounce the bill and the Rules Committee. The most important things are these: 1) Let's take advantage of this little bit of extra time and keep getting phone calls, telegrams, e-mails and faxes to the House. THE REPRESENTATIVES NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU! Even many typically liberal" or "environmental" Members have not yet decided which way to vote on this! On the other hand several very conservative members will vote against HR 1270 so even if your Member has not been cooperative in the past don't be afraid to contact him/her now. 2) The message is simple: oppose HR 1270 regardless of whether any amendments are approved. The bill cannot be improved sufficiently to be supported; it must be stopped. Thanks!
