1997 (AFP) - A 2.3 tonnes container containing a
Strontium-90 battery fell from a helicopter into the sea 150
metres off the nothern shore of the Russian far east island
Sahalin. Officials said the lead container could withstand the
fall and no radiation could be released.

1997 (Reuter) - U.S. federal Judge Stanley Sporkin
rejected a request by anti-nuclear groups to stop the U.S.
gouvernment spending $40 billion on maintance and
modernization of its nuclear arsenal. The judge also asked the
Department of Energy to disclose information on its plutonium
pit remanufacturing plans
its National Ignition Facility and
alternatives to the stockpile management program.
