Mar 22, 1997 (Reuter) - About 10,000 demonstrated against the construction of a new nuclear power plant near Nantes, France on Saturday. The opposition Socialist Party called the plan a serious error. Mar 22, 1997 (UPI) - The Francisco Bay Ceonservation and Development Commission voted against the planned shipments of altogether one ton of foreign spent nuclear fuel through the San Francisco Bay. The plan is part of a U.s. department of Energy program to import 20 tons of spent fuel from 41 countries to keep it safe. The waste is to be disposed at the Concord Naval Weapons Station in Idaho. The commission decided to file in a lawsuit. Yeltsin agreed on a interpretation on a 1972 treaty, that it was allowed to test air defense systems without limits on the power or speed of interceptor missiles. Mar 18, 1997 (AP) - France is going to give iodine pills to about 600,000 people living near a nuclear power plant in order to prepare them for an accident. If the pills are taken, the tyroid will accumulate no further iodine, a radioactive isotop of which is set free at nuclear accidents.
