Jan 29, 1997 (Reuter) - A hunger strike against the shipment
of nuclear waste from Taiwan to North Korea was begun by six
activists from Green Korea and local anti-nuclear groups in
Taipei.

Jan 29, 1997 (Reuter) - The U.S. voiced slight concern about
the shipment of nuclear waste from Taiwan to North Korea. A
state Departement official said there would be no threat of
proliferation but asked Taiwan to consult effected states over
the deal.

Jan 29, 1997 (UPI) - In a testimony before the Senate
Veterans' Affairs Committee General Norman Schwarzkopf, who
led the force against Iraq in the Gulf War, said the threat of
nuclear weapons kept Saddam Hussein from using chemical
weapons.

Jan 29, 1997 (Reuter) - The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will
put another five nuclear power plants of their list of
stations considered unsafe. The list contains:  - Crystal
River 3 (741 megawatts), Citrus County, Fla., operated by
Florida Progress Corp - LaSalle units 1 and 2, (1,078 MW
each), Seneca, Ill., operated by Commonwealth Edison ( Unicom
Corp Chicago Illinois ) - Maine Yankee (910 MW), Wiscasset,
Me., operated by Maine Yankee Atomic Power Co, a consortium of
Northeast utilities - Salem units 1 and 2 (1,106 MW each),
Salem, N.J., operated by Public Service Electric & Gas, a unit
of General Public Utilities Corp ( GPU Inc ) - Zion units 1
and 2, (1,040 MW each), Zion, Ill., operated by Commonwealth
Edison Co ( Unicom Corp Chicago Illinois )

Jan 29, 1997 (UPI) - Additional to the extension of the list
of unsafe nuclear power plants, the NRC sent warning letters
to Illinois Power for problems at its Clinton station and to
the Point Beach plant, operated by Wisconsin Electric.

Jan 29, 1997 (Reuter) - About 100 environmental activists
jammed the traffic in Cape Town, South Africa, for about two
hous to protest against the shipment of reprocessed nuclear
waste from France to Japan. The ship is expected to pass Cape
town on saturday, but would not come closer than 120 miles.
