Jan 24, 1997 (Reuter) - Taiwan state utility Taipower is
holding a tender over 340,000 kg of uranium a year. Bids for
two three-year contracts are invited, the decision will be on
February 27. China voiced concern about the uranium import of
its arch rival. Delivery of the uranium is already specified
to take place in September 1997, March 1998 and March 1999.
The tender could raise anti-nuclear protests.

Jan 24, 1997 (Reuter) - According to the french newspaper Le
Monde, Germany and France had agreed to open ``a dialogue on
the role on nuclear deterrence in the context of a European
defence policy.'' The paper published excerpts from what it
said to be a common strategic concept, which state the two
countries would plan a ``concerted defence policy'' on a
strictly equal footing.

Jan 24, 1997 (Reuter) - Only a minority stake of the only
Hungarian nuclear power plant at Paks, which is to be
privatised this year, shall be sold, Jozsef Szabo, general
manager of the plant, said. The majority of the station, which
covers 40.8 percent of the national electricity production and
posted US$ 1.5 million of pre-tax profits last year, will
remain in the hands of the state.

said on his visit in New Dehli, India's opposition to the
Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty would hinder its bid to become a
permanent member of the Security Council.

Jan 24, 1997 (Reuter) - In the turbine hall of the scottish
nuclear reactor Hunterston 3 was a smoldering fire about one
o'clock on Friday. The reactor was shut down and the fire was
extinguished by the local fire brigade. A spokesman of
scottish Nuclear said the fire remained in the non-nuclear
part of the plant, and there were no risks for the public.

Jan 24, 1997 (UPI) -- ComEd was fined US$650,000 for an
incident from June 28 last year in its LaSalle nuclear power
station, which lead to the shutdown of two reactors. The
Nuclear Regulatory Commission had found serious violations of
safety rules.

Jan 24, 1997 (Reuter) - Michael Sellman, vice president for
operations of Entergy's Waterford 3 nuclear unit, will be the
new chief nuclear officer of the Maine Yankee nuclear power
plant, the management of which was handed over by its owner to
Entergy for its permanent safety problems.

Jan 25, 1997 (UPI) - In reaction of Taiwan's denial to block
the shipment of nuclear waste to North Korea, south Korean
environmental activists demonstrated on Saturday in front of
Taipei's representative office in soul. during the
demonstrations a taiwanese flag and an effigy of Taiwanese
president Lee Teng-hui were burned.

Jan 25, 1997 (Reuter) - On a visit to South Korean President
Kim Young-sam Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto agreed
with his criticism of Taiwanese plans to ship nuclear waste to
North Korea.

possibilities of further nuclear weapons reduction under a
START-3 treaty to encourage Russian parliament to ratify
START-2.
