21 Oct 1996 (Reuter) - Hitachi Ltd. and Toshiba Corp. are to
take part in construction of the fourth nuclear power plant in
Taiwan, the construction of which will be headed by General
Electric Co., U.S. The reactor is planned to be built in Japan
and shipped to Taiwan. The Japanese industry views this as a
possibility to extend markets while construction of nuclear
power plants in Japan become less due to public resistance.

21 Oct 1996 (Reuter) - France said it would demolate its
installations on Murorua, the atoll used as a nuclear testing
site, and leave it in its ``natural state''. All the plans for
fishing,  touristic or whatsoever development are simply
countered by the fact that Mururoa is isolated and far away
from every other island or continent. The deconstruction, in
which about 1,000 workers are involved, is expected to be
finished in mid 1998.

21 Oct 1996 (Reuter) - ``The [Australian] government has
decided to lift the ban on new uranium supply contracts with
France in the light of the French signature of the
Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty on Sept. 24,'', Tim Fisher,
Australian Deputy Prime Minister said. Aborigines are strongly
opposed to the plans of new uranium mines involved with the
decision to lift the 1988 ban.
