19 Sep 1996 (Reuter) - Ukrainian officials said Thursday that
neutron radiation readings had risen considerably inside the
Chernobyl nuclear plant's ruined fourth reactor and called for
new efforts to rebuild the cracking ``sarcophagus'' housing
it. Viktor Baryakhtar, vice-president of Ukraine's Academy of
Sciences, told Ukrinform news agency that readings of neutron
activity in the steel and concrete ``sarcophagus'' covering
the reactor had risen by five to 110 times this week. 
Baryakhtar, top nuclear adviser of the Ukrainian president,
described the increased readings as a ``chain reaction'' which
lasted from four to five hours Monday. 

19 Sep 1996 (Reuter) - Civilians working in the cash-strapped
Russian armed forces and the defense industry launched a
series of protests Thursday against chronic wage delays. ``The
armed forces of the Russian Federation seem to be reaching a
critical point in their overstretched patience,'' the
presidential newspaper Rossiskiye Vesti said Thursday.
``Sociological surveys show that...the military is extremely
unhappy with its current situation and is sliding toward the
dangerous state where it could take unpredictable actions.''

19 Sep 1996 (Reuter) - Indonesia's Research and Technology
Minister Jusuf Habibie indicated interest in buying Australian
uranium during a meeting with Prime Minister John Howard this
week, sources briefed on the meeting said on Thursday.
