Sept 5, 1996 (Reuter) - The European Bank for Reconstruction
and Development's independent panel to study the completion of
two nuclear reactors to replace Chernobyl will not have enough
time to perform a thorough review, say insiders. The panel
will examine the feasibility of getting the Khmelnitsky 2 and
Rivne 4 nuclear reactors up and running in time for the
closure of Chernobyl by the year 2000. Sources close to the
study said the timescale for completion by November 29 was
simply too tight to give the panel, which will be led by
British academic John Surrey, a realistic chance of looking at
alternatives to nuclear power.
