Although their anti-nuclear protest ship MV Greenpeace was kept from reaching Shanghai, the environmentalists claimed success in carrying their message to China and the world. The MV Greenpeace will sail now to Japan, where crew members will hold a ceremony on June 28 in Nagasaki, target of the second U.S. atomic bomb attack after Hiroshima. --- -- - June 16 1996 (Reuter) - A draft comprehensive test ban treaty (CTBT) which would outlaw nuclear blasts has met fierce criticism in India even as western powers hail it as cornerstone of arms control. India, which tested an atomic device in 1974, says it has no nuclear weapons programme and has denied reports that it plans to conduct a second test. But Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda's government, which won a parliamentary confidence vote last week, has pledged to retain an option to build nuclear weapons until universal nuclear disarmament is achieved. --- -- - June 14 1996 (Reuter) - Britain expects a global treaty banning nuclear tests to be completed on time in two weeks, but an inspection mechanism to check against cheating must be agreed first, its disarmament ambassador said on Friday. Sir Michael Weston also said the pact would be "pointless" unless the five declared nuclear powers and the three threshold states -- India, Israel and Pakistan -- were fully on board. Procedural issues, however, remain to be ironed out. --- -- - June 14 1996 (Reuter) - A United Nations nuclear watchdog called on Friday for greater powers for International nuclear inspectors to help them detect illicit nuclear material. "The (IAEA) Board (of Governors) acknowledged that additional in- formation, including the taking of environmental samples and increased physical access would strengthen the Agency's ability to detect undeclared nuclear material and activities," the IAEA said. The group, to be chaired by Ambassador Joost van Ebbenhorst of the Netherlands, would start work in July and would report to the board with its conclusions in December. ^REUTER June 14 1996 (Reuter) - The MV Greenpeace anti-nuclear protest ship was out of Chinese waters on Friday and was steaming towards Hong Kong after a showdown with the Chinese authorites over nuclear tests. Earlier the MV Greenpeace was escorted out of Chinese waters by Chinese Navy gunboats as China refused to let the activists sail into Shanghai to deliver their protest message.
