5 June 1996 (Reuter) - China's Daya Bay nuclear plant in
southern Guangdong province has resumed full capacity
generation after the refuelling, maintenance and replacement
of guide tubes of control rods, the Xinhua news  agency said
on Wednesday. A problem with the dropping time of control rods
in both units of the plant had been completely solved, an
official said, a damaged exciter in Unit 2 had been
transported to Britain for repairs a few months ago and after
repairs had been installed in Unit 1 where it was  operating
well.

4 June 1996 (Reuter) - The United States has tentatively
endorsed a proposal by South Africa to admit 23 states --
including Iraq, Israel and North Korea -- to the Conference on
Disarmament, diplomats said on Tuesday. The United
Nations-sponsored forum, the world's main disarmament
negotiating body, is expected to debate the controversial
proposal at a plenary on Thursday, they added.
