28 may 1996 (Reuter) - The chairman of the negotiations in
Geneva, Jaap Ramaker, on Tuesday tabled a new draft he
expected to form the basis for compromise agreement, so that
the traety can be signed in Septemer. China has not accepted
the ban of all nuclear explosions yet and the draft also fails
to meet the demands by India and Pakistan for a commitment to
a firm timetable for total nuclear disarmament.

27 may 1996 (Reuter) - Democratic Progressive Party deputies
have petitioned to impeach Premier Lien Chan for not halting
Friday's tender for the plant's US$1.8 billion nuclear
reactor. They said Lien, economics minister Chiang Ping-kun
and Chang Chung-chien, chairman of state-owned Taiwan Power
Co, went ahead despite knowing parliament  had voted 76-42 on
Friday to cancel funding for Taipower's fourth nuclear
station.

26 may 1996 (Reuter) - With US$1.8 billion, General Electric
Co (GE) has won a tender to supply two nuclear reactors and
related equipment for Taiwan's controversial fourth nuclear
power plant, Taiwan Power said on Sunday, but the project's
future looked uncertain.

25 may 1996 (Reuter) - France's state-owned nuclear fuel firm,
Cogema, denied on Saturday a press report that it was set to
help Germany resolve a bitter, costly struggle over nuclear
dumping by offering to store German waste for 20 to 30 years.

28 may 1996 (UPI) -- Ukrainian officials reported the shutting
down of one of the three nuclear reactors at the Rivne NPP in
western Ukraine on Tuesday because of a cracked steam
generator.  No radiation was released and it was  no danger to
the environment. "Everything is under control and nobody  was
hurt."   said Nikolai Oberkovich, spokesman for the State
Committee on Nuclear Energy.

27 may 1996 (UPI) -- Ye Qing, vice-minister of the State
Planning Committee, said any new thermal power plants built in
China from 1996 to 2000 must be equipped with high- efficiency
generators with a capacity of at least 300,000 kilowatts.
Speaking at a recent two-day energy conference, Ye said China
plans to build large, clean coal-fired, nuclear and
hydro-power plants during the Ninth Five-Year Plan.
