14 May (Reuter) - Western envoys on Tuesday welcomed China's
signal it would relax its demand that a nuclear test ban
treaty allow "peaceful nuclear explosions" but said they
awaited concrete proposals. Jaap Ramaker, the Dutch ambassador
who chairs the 38-state talks on a comprehensive test ban
treaty (CTBT) in Geneva said at the start of a seven-week
negotiating session he was confident that a deal could be
struck by the end of June.
