     March 27, 1996 (Reuter) - Egyptian monitors have started
checking radiation levels on Egypt's border with Israel after
reports of possible leaks from Dimona nuclear reactor in the
Negev Desert, a foreign ministry official. In Israel
Environment Minister Yossi Sarid denied reports, carried 
prominently in the Egyptian press on Tuesday and Wednesday, of
a hazard posed by the Dimona nuclear complex. 


     March 27, 1996 (Reuter) - South China's booming Guangdong
province near Hong Kong hopes to put eight to 10 more nuclear
reactors on line by 2010, provincial energy officials said.
The energy appetite of Guangdong, like many other Chinese
provinces, has soared in the past decade due to rapid economic
growth. Guangdong expects its gross domestic product to grow
11 percent a year through the end of the century.


     March 27, 1996 (Reuter) - Moscow has offered Beijing a $2
billion low-interest loan (four percent), to supply two
Russian reactors and other gear to a nuclear power plant in
northeast China, a plant official said on Wednesday. The first
phase construction of the nuclear plant, located in Wafangdian
city near the Bohai Bay in Liaoning province, is estimated to
cost $4 billion.
