      5 Jan 1996 (Reuter) - A radioactive leak at a Ukrainian
nuclear power station which contaminated a small area within
the plant remained undetected for weeks, an official at the
plant said. Duty officer Vyacheslav Kruglov told Reuter from
the Southern Ukraine power plant that authorities had
discovered the leak in a steam pipe at the station's third
reactor on Wednesday. The reactor was shut down and
contaminated topsoil over an area of about 30 square metres
(1000 square feet) collected and buried.

      5 Jan 1996 (UPI) - With a thundering blast that rumbled
through the frozen plains, three former Cold Warriors
destroyed a missile silo that once held a nuclear missile
aimed at the United States. Defense Secretary William Perry
and his Ukrainian and Russian counterparts - Valeri Shmarov
and Pavel Grachev - braved bitter cold and driving sleet as
they simultaneously turned keys that set off an explosion
destroying the former hold of an SS-19 nuclear missile.

      8 Jan 1996 (Reuter) - China will continue its nuclear
cooperation with Iran, a Chinese official said on during a
visit to Tehran, state-run Tehran radio reported. U.S.
officials said in September Beijing had assured Washington the
deal would not go ahead, and Chinese officials  later said
China had "suspended for the time being" the reactor sale.

      8 Jan 1996 (Reuter) - French President Jacques Chirac
will take part in an international conference on nuclear
security to be held in Moscow on April 19-20, his office said.

      8 Jan 1996 (Reuter) - Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir
Mohamad urged the Asia-Pacific region to pay more attention to
arms control, including nuclear weapons. Mahathir said the
Pacific region "more than any other needs to implement the
provisions of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty more
vigorously"
