Sweden voted in 1980 to shut down its nuclear power stations, which supply half of the country's electricity, as soon as was economically and environmentally viable. Parliament later set the shut-off date at 2010. 7 Dec 1995 (Reuter) - A technical incident shut down a reactor at Ukraine's Zaporizha nuclear power station for the second time this week, further stretching the former Soviet republic's failing power network. The director of the affected reactor, the fifth of six 1,000-megawatt units at Europe's largest station, blamed the incident on a drop in water levels during a routine operation to cut capacity. He said there had been no release of radiation and the reactor would be restarted within 12 hours.
