He added that he stood by the result of a referendum 15 years ago when Swedes voted to phase out nuclear power. 6 Dec 1995 (UPI) - France said it will end its series of nuclear tests before the end of February, one month earlier than previously announced. France has already conducted four of the six underground nuclear explosions it plans in the South Pacific, despite widespread international condemnation of the program. 6 Dec 1995 (UPI) - Government scientists said they have devised a method that could significantly extend the safe and reliable storage of the nation's nuclear waste. The promising approach may prolong by tens of thousands of years the lifetime of nuclear waste storage containers at the proposed national underground repository at Yucca Mountain, Nev., the researchers said. The method, developed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, would use the heat given off by the containers to produce a "dry environment" that could keep thousands of tons of nuclear waste safely stored for tens of thousands of years, the researchers said.
