The plant is located 60 miles from the Austrian border. French and Slovak builders had caused more suspicions when they refused to attend a hearing on the plans earlier this month. (Jan. 30) Reuter is reporting that one of the still operating reactors at Chernobyl was shutdown when technicians accidentally triggered an automatic security system. (Jan. 30) Reuter is reporting that Japanese officials are hoping to assuage fears over the planned shipment of plutonium in mid-February but does not know how to decrease the fears. (Jan. 30) Reuter is reporting that two separate incidents on Monday at two Japanese reactors have caused one reactor to shutdown and the other to operate at reduced power. (Jan. 30) Reuter is reporting that a truck crossing the border between Lithuania and Balarus set off a radiation alarms. The truck had a false bottom which hid two tons of radioactive tungsten and was sent to the Ignalina plant for decontamination. The radioactivity was more than 180 times the level considered safe.
