U.S. and Israeli officials believe Iran is much closer to producing atomic arms than previously thought, maybe less than five years. (Jan. 9) Reuter is reporting that the European Union's next energy commissioner doubts that plutonium reprocessing will be economical or safe, and therefore, may not be incorporated into the European economy. (Jan. 9) Reuter is reporting that the French company accused of selling uranium to South Africa is denying selling enriched uranium. The company does admit selling enriched fuel rods to South Africa that had been assembled from South African supplied uranium. (Jan. 10) Reuter is reporting that Greenpeace is urging the US and Panama to prevent a cargo of high level nuclear waste from crossing the Panama Canal. The shipment would be the most toxic ever to cross the ocean. The Panama Canal Commission will permit passage if the ship meets international shipping standards. (Jan. 10) Reuter is reporting that South Africa's former foreign minister says President Reagan helped his country obtain enriched uranium in return for a promise to not detonate a nuclear weapon without first telling Washington. END ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is one of the last mailings for those who are not signed on to the nukenet list through envirolink (you'd know if you were). If you're not, you can sign on any time by sending mail to: LISTPROC@ENVIROLINK.ORG and write: SUBSCRIBE NUKENET Firstname Lastname in the message and nothing more. There are many people on this list who did not sign on to the new list yet. You will no longer get anything from us unless you sign on through the envirolink address. I've been saving up many things (like email address of NRC members, a report on a leaking nuke dump in France, new news on high level waste, fact sheets...) for when we move onto the envirolink list. This is one of the last 2 or 3 messages for those who don't resubscribe. If you have any questions or problems, mail me at MXE115@psuvm.psu.edu Mike Mail?
