His position will not be filled. Instead, Paul Fessler and the Technical Manager, Joe Plona, will report directly to Douglas Gibson, Senior Vice President, Nuclear Generation. MR Number: 4-98-0017 Diablo Canyon 2 Date: 03/30/98 Avila Beach,California Telephone call from RI Dockets: 50-323 PWR/W-4-LP Subject: REACTOR STARTUP FOLLOWING REFUELING OUTAGE Discussion: On March 27, 1998, Unit 2 began a startup from its eighth refueling outage. Criticality was achieved at 5:19 a.m.(PST)on March 27, and the main generator was connected to the grid at 1:12 a.m.(PST)on March 28. The refueling outage was scheduled for 35 days but took 42 days to complete. As of 8:00 a.m.(PST) on March 30, Unit 2 was at 50 percent power and increasing to 100 percent power. Unit 2 began the refueling outage on February 14, 1998. Major planned activities accomplished during the outage included steam generator tube inspections, replacement of the 125 volt dc vital Battery 2-3, 10-year inspection of the reactor coolant Pump 2-1 motor, installation of new emergency core cooling system restricting orifices and throttle valves, replacement of the containment recirculation sump screen, tie-in of the auxiliary saltwater system bypass piping, replacement of auxiliary Transformer 2-1, installation of automatic load tap change controls for startup Transformer 2-1, and rewind of the circulating water Pump 2-1 motor.
