MR Number: 1-98-0043 Vermont Yankee 1 Date: 08/28/98 Vernon,Vermont SRI PC Dockets: 50-271 BWR/GE-4 Subject: NUCLEAR FREE NEW ENGLAND CAMPAIGN PROTEST AND CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE AT VERMONT YANKEE Discussion: The Citizens Awareness Network and Nuclear Information Resource Service sponsored a week long camp near Brattleboro, Vermont to foster anti-nuclear activism. A protest, including nonviolent acts of civil disobedience, took place at the Vermont Yankee site on August 27, 1998. About 125 people took part in the demonstration, of which about 20 people were arrested by local law authorities. The licensee, state and local law enforcement agencies ensured that access to the facility was maintained and that the protest did not affect the ability to safely operate the plant.
