Subject: TURBINE TRIP/RX TRIP                                            

Discussion:

On January 26, 1998, at about 9:53 p.m. central daylight time, Braidwood 
Unit 2 underwent a turbine trip and reactor trip. All equipment operated 
as expected after the reactor trip. The cause of the trip is unknown.    
However, the licensee was performing troubleshooting maintenance on a    
circuit card for the main turbine digital electo-hydraulic control system
at the time of the trip. The licensee plans to cool the unit down to 360 
degrees Fahrenheit and remain shutdown for at least seven days to perform
forced outage maintenance. The Senior Resident Inspector responded to the
site.                                                                    

Regional Action:

Resident Inspector followup of the root cause of the trip and forced     
outage maintenance.
