Subject: Completion of Refueling Outage 9                                

Discussion:

Grand Gulf Unit 1 was taken critical at 9:57 p.m. on May 19, 1998,       
for the conduct of physics testing following completion of Refueling     
Outage 9. The total outage duration was 39 days. The outage began        
April 11, 1998, and was originally scheduled for 32 days. The licensee   
synchronized the main generator to the grid and closed the output breaker
at 6:57 p.m. on May 21, 1998. In addition to refueling, major work       
accomplished during the outage included replacement of one low pressure  
turbine, installation of a full torus essential core cooling system      
suction strainer, inspection of the reactor vessel, and replacement of   
34 control rods. There were no major emergent work items.

The resident staff is monitoring startup activities.
