MR Number: 3-98-0027 Dresden 3 Date: 04/10/98 Morris,Illinois ENS PHONE CALL 34039 Dockets: 50-249 BWR/GE-3 Subject: UNIT 3 REACTOR SCRAM Discussion: On April 9, the licensee reported that Dresden Unit 3 scrammed from 100 percent power when all four main steam line isolation valves went closed. The cause of the isolation was unknown although a « group I isolation signal had been inserted as required by Technical Specifications when a high steam line flow Barton switch failed. Repair work for the switch was in the planning process at the time. Following the scram, equipment performed as expected, however, a high water level in the reactor appeared to have put water into the high pressure coolant injection system turbine steam lines and the system was declared inoperable. Regional Action: The SRI and resident inspector responded to the site. A special inspection team was dispatched to the site and followup activities are in progress. Contact: M. RING (630)829-9703 _
