The recycler notified the Department of Environmental Quality, who dispatched inspectors to survey the load on February 4, 1998. The surveys isolated a small piece of metal that the inspectors determined to be uranium. There were no markings or other distinguishing marks to aid in determining the origin of the material. The State inspectors measured 3.3 millirem per hour on the surface of the material. The NRC contacts informed the State representatives that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was the Lead Federal Agency with regard to radioactive material in the public domain that could not be associated with a specific NRC or Agreement State licensee. The Region confirmed the name and telephone number of an EPA representative for the State of Michigan. Regional Action: The Region does not plan any additional action, unless specifically requested by the State of Michigan or EPA.
