Subject: PARTIAL LOSS OF FEED WATER - MAIN FEED PUMP TRIP                

Discussion:

On August 5, 1998, with Salem Unit 1 at 100 percent power, one of the two
steam generator feed pumps (SGFP) tripped.  Plant systems automatically  
reduced power to approximately 60 percent in a well controlled manner.   
All other plant equipment functioned as designed.  PSE and G personnel   
have not yet determined the cause of the SGFP trip, and are maintaining  
stable plant conditions at 65 percent power during their troubleshooting 
efforts.  Salem Unit 2 remains in cold shutdown (Mode 5) with mid-cycle  
outage activities in progress.                                           

Regional Action:

The NRC resident inspectors observed the control room operators' response
to the transient, and are continuing to monitor PSE and G troubleshooting
activities.
