The cooking pots were manufactured by the Volrath Company in Wisconsin from steel they had received from the Allegheny Steel Company. The Navy surveyed all the cooking pots in their possession and found cobalt-60 only in those stamped with lot number M43. The Navy determined that the average level of contamination for each pot was 0.002 microcuries which was equal to 1 picocurie/gram. The pots were manufactured from three ply steel. Surveys performed by the Navy indicated that the middle carbon steel layer was the source of the cobolt-60. The Navy has contacted the manufacturer and is keeping the pots in storage for further analysis and subsequent disposition. The NRC, in conjunction with the Navy, notified the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the EPA has assumed the responsibility as the lead Federal agency for followup on this finding.
