MR Number: 2-97-0041 Harris 1 Date: 05/30/97 Raleigh,North Carolina Dockets: 50-400 PWR/W-3-LP Subject: MANAGEMENT CHANGES Discussion: Carolina Power and Light Company Executive Vice President announced on May 29, 1997 that Ms. Donna Alexander has been selected for the position of Manager - Performance Evaluation and Regulatory Affairs reporting directly to the Executive VP. Mr. Tom Walt, who previously held this position, will be entering Senior Reactor Operator certification class. Ms. Alexander previously held the position of Supervisor - Licensing/ Regulatory Programs at Harris. This position is currently vacant. In addition, Mr. Greg Rolfson, Manager - Harris Plant Engineering announced that effective June 1, 1997, Mr. Steve Sewell will become the Mechanical Unit Superintendent in Harris Engineering. The Mechanical Unit currently reports to Mr. Bob Duncan, who will be entering training to get his Senior Reactor Operator license. Mr. Terry Morton, who has been filling in for Mr. Duncan while he was on assignment at Millstone Plant, will be returning to Raleigh Corporate Office to head up the Performance Evaluation Section, which reports to Ms. Alexander. SHYMLOCK (404)562-4540 _ REGION II MORNING REPORT PAGE 2 MAY 30, 1997 Licensee/Facility: Notification: Federal Express MR Number: 2-97-0042 Memphis International Airport Date: 05/30/97 Memphis,Tennessee Subject: TRANSPORTATION EVENT UPDATE Reportable Event Number: 32404 Discussion: Tennessee, an Agreement State, has notified Region II concerning the actions taken in response to the fire involving the depleted uranium bar at the Memphis, Tennessee's Federal Express facility on May 29, 1997. State inspectors responded to the event on May 29, 1997, interviewed personnel, and conducted confirmatory surveys. The fire was ignited when a bar of uranium material was dropped on a concrete floor in an indoors area of the facility. During the event, the uranium bar was relocated to an outside paved area. The Federal Express Radiation Safety Officer had already instituted controls and cleanup operations including surveys of the personnel and the area when the State personnel arrived. The State personnel reported that there was no radioactive contamination inside the building, and that the building had been released for use when they arrived. The State reported that there was no contamination or exposure to personnel, as confirmed by personnel surveys and nasal smears. There was some radioactive contamination on the outside paved area, which has been restricted and will be cleaned up by a contractor. The shipper and the consignee have not been identified at this time. MR Number: 2-97-0043 Surry 1 2 Date: 05/30/97 Surry,Virginia Dockets: 50-280,50-281 PWR/W-3-LP,PWR/W-3-LP Subject: VEPCO MANAGEMENT CHANGES Discussion: The Virginia Power Co. ha announced the following key management changes that will affect operation of their nuclear power plants in Region II. Mr. Norman Askew will be the new President and CEO effective August 1, 1997. He was the East Midlands Electricity Chief Executive. He will replace Dr. J. Rhodes who announced his retirement in April. At Surry, Jim McCarthy will move from Assistant Station Manager, Operations and Maintenance, to Manager, Nuclear Licensing and Operations Support effective June 1. Bryce Shriver will move from Assistant Station Manager, Nuclear Safety and Licensing, to Assistant Station Manager, Operations and Maintenance. Richard Blount will move from Superintendent, Maintenance, to Assistant Station Manager, Nuclear Safety and Licensing. These changes were announced by the licensee on May 23 and 28, 1997.
