Subject: REACTOR SHUTDOWN                                                

Discussion:

The licensee will commence the final reactor shutdown on the midnight    
shift. The final scram is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. (EDT) tomorrow. The   
RIII Regional Administrator and other dignitaries will be present to     
witness the last hours of operation. The most recent plant startup was on
February 2, 1997, and operated at full power until coast down was        
commenced at 5:40 p.m., May 27, 1997. The licensee plans to have the     
reactor defueled by September 15, 1997, ending 35 years of reactor       
operations at the Big Rock Point Nuclear Station. Decommissioning        
activities will commence after the reactor is defueled.
