MR Number: 1-97-0067 Oyster Creek 1 Date: 12/16/97 Forked River,New Jersey Dockets: 50-219 BWR/GE-2 Subject: GPUN REORGANIZATION Discussion: On December 12, 1997, GPU Nuclear President, T. Gary Broughton announced a number of organizational changes. The reorganization will reduce the number of company divisions from five to four and eliminate one corporate officer position. The Nuclear Safety and Technical Services Division will be eliminated. Art Rone, Vice President and Director of Nuclear Safety and Technical Services, will be named the Vice President and Director of Engineering, replacing Bob Keaton, who retires at the end of the year. Last month, Broughton named, Pat Walsh, Director, Equipment Reliability - TMI, to be Acting Director, Engineering, effective at the end of the year. Walsh will serve in that position until the transition is completed (approximately two to three months). Under the reorganization, the nuclear safety assessment and licensing functions will move from the Nuclear Safety and Technical Services Division to the Office of the President. John Fornicola, Director, Nuclear Safety Assessment, will report directly to Broughton. A new nuclear safety oversight review committee, reporting to Broughton, will be formed to provide additional review and oversight of nuclear safety activities at GPU Nuclear. GPU Nuclear's radiological controls, industrial safety, environmental and emergency preparedness activities will move from Safety and Technical Services Division to the plant divisions. Mike Slobodien, Director, Radiological Health and Safety, will oversee the Radiological Field Operations, Radiological Engineering, Industrial Safety and Health, Environmental Affairs and Emergency Preparedness groups at the plant. Slobodien will report to Mike Roche, Vice President and Director, Oyster Creek. The Training Department will also be moved from the Nuclear Safety and Technical Services Division to the plant divisions. Joe Kowalski, Training and Education Director at Oyster Creek, will be responsible for Oyster Creek and Corporate training and will report to Mike Roche. Regional Action: For information only.
