Carter NEW ISSUE. Beaver Valley Unit 2 reports that nozzle check valves manufactured by Enertech and used in the AFW system may be susceptible to a failure in which the seating ring can become loosened, because of differential thermal contraction between the valve body and seat, and be swept into the flow stream. This could cause a partial blockage and potentially prevent the AFW system from performing its intended function. _ HEADQUARTERS MORNING REPORT PAGE 3 MAY 15, 1997 MR Number: H-97-0054 NRR DAILY REPORT ITEM GENERIC COMMUNICATIONS Subject: Part 21 - Excessive air leakage in scram solenoid pilot valves VENDOR: ASCO PT21 FILE NO: 97340 DATE OF DOCUMENT: 04/29/97 ACCESSION NUMBER: SOURCE DOCUMENT: EN 32240 REVIEWER: PECB, D. Skeen NEW ISSUE. Enertech reports that 13 out of 36 scram solenoid valves exhibited excessive air leakage at Oyster Creek. An investigation by the utility, General Electric, and ASCO concluded that the leakage was the result of hardening of the core disc in the scram solenoid pilot valve pilot head. Subsequent investigation by ASCO also indicated that some of the Oyster Creek valves may have been shipped with core discs fabricated from commercial grade Buna-N (Nitrile) material rather than the required nuclear grade fluorocarbon material. _ HEADQUARTERS MORNING REPORT PAGE 4 MAY 15, 1997 MR Number: H-97-0055 NRR DAILY REPORT ITEM GENERIC COMMUNICATIONS Subject: Part 21 - Noisy operation of a scram solenoid pilot valve VENDOR: AVCO PT21 FILE NO: 97360 DATE OF DOCUMENT: 05/01/97 ACCESSION NUMBER: SOURCE DOCUMENT: EN 32253 REVIEWER: PECB, D. Skeen NEW ISSUE. AVCO reports noisy operation of a scram solenoid pilot valve at Vermont Yankee. The noise was determined to be from metallic vibration within the valve. _ REGION II MORNING REPORT PAGE 5 MAY 15, 1997 Licensee/Facility: Notification: Carolina Power & Light Co.
