Coal Company notified Region I that it had identified among recently-obtained equipment, a gauge that was labeled as containing 200 millicuries of cesium-137. The company had recently obtained a building in Distant, Pennsylvania, which contained the gauge, from Brookport Resources. Doverspike Bros. removed the gauge and transported it to the Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania facility. On March 13, 1997, Doverspike Bros. informed Region I that the gauge was determined to be a Kay Ray Gauge Model 3660 and that the source is in the shielded position. Doverspike Bros. contracted a health physicist who performed a survey of the gauge and wired the shutter in the closed position. Inspectors from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were also dispatched to the facility and performed surveys. The surveys performed by the health physicist indicated an exposure rate of 1mR/hr, at the surface of the gauge. Doverspike Bros. and the health physicist will package and ship the gauge back to Kay Ray in a few days in accordance with DOT regulations. Contact: J. Joustra (610)337-5355 _
